A Guide to Sump Pump Maintenance for Wheat Ridge, CO Homeowners
Your sump pump is your primary defense against groundwater flooding in your Wheat Ridge, CO home. Regular inspection and maintenance are crucial to ensure it will work when you need it most. Here are key maintenance tips from the experts at JLK Plumbing.
- 1. Test Your Sump Pump Regularly: You should test your pump every few months, especially before the start of the rainy season in Wheat Ridge, CO. Simply pour a bucket of water into the sump pit to raise the float. The pump should turn on, remove the water, and then shut off.
- 2. Clean the Sump Pit: The sump pit can collect dirt, gravel, and debris that can be sucked into the pump and clog or damage it. Once a year, unplug the pump and remove any visible debris from the pit.
- 3. Inspect the Check Valve: The check valve on the discharge pipe prevents water from flowing back into the pit after the pump shuts off. Ensure the arrow on the valve is pointing away from the pump and that it is functioning correctly.
- 4. Ensure the Discharge Line is Clear: Make sure the discharge line that carries water out of your Wheat Ridge, CO home is not blocked by debris, dirt, or ice. The line should extend at least 10-20 feet away from your foundation to ensure proper drainage.
- 5. Consider a Battery Backup System: Standard sump pumps run on electricity. If a severe Wheat Ridge, CO storm knocks out your power, your primary pump will not work. A battery backup sump pump is a secondary, battery-powered pump that automatically turns on if the power fails or if the primary pump can't keep up with heavy water flow. This is the single best upgrade for ensuring your basement stays dry.Regular maintenance is key, but if you notice your pump is making strange noises, running constantly, or failing to turn on, it's time to call a professional plumber from JLK Plumbing in Wheat Ridge, CO for an expert repair or replacement.
